You are the Manufacturer
I am posting an email I received this weekend and my response as it is a very typical example of emails that I regularly receive
Dear Frances:
First of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for putting together the FBI and all the other resources for fashion designers and apparel manufacturers. Though we are based out of Texas, i refer to your website on an ongoing basis for all the valuable information it has to offer. I have purchased your books- fashion for profit, costing for profit, the dvd seminar, as well as the dvd seminars for fashion for profit, operational management, putting together your sales team, and a well crafted sales agreement. I have read it from cover to cover at least twice and I am constantly finding myself referring to the books when i am at a particular stage of development. The information is in such a concise and easy to find and read manner that, quite honestly it is worth its weight in gold. I only wish we were in california to better take advantage of all the seminars that you offer :) but nonetheless, thank you.
I just have one question that i am hoping you can help me figure out- it has to do with business licenses- we are based in texas, but our contractor/manufacturer that we work with is based in orange county california. Would we need to get a license from California or one from Texas, or both? If I need from california, is it possible to get one without being based there? any light that you can shed on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I am not fully sure of the answer to your entire question but what you are in fact referring to is in fact the Manufacturing license, not your business license, which you obtain from your local city where you conduct your business. I do know that if you are doing business in California that you would need to apply for your Manufacturing license. You are the Manufacturer as you purchase the piece goods. The contractor is contracted by you to sew your goods. They need to show you proof of their contracting licenses.
If you are doing business here in California and you are from out of state but using a contractor here in California it is VERY important that you make sure that your contractor provides you with evidence that they have their contracting license. Get a copy of it. If possible see their original copy which should be posted in their place of business. If you are working with a California contractor who has not provided you with his legal documentation you maybe at risk of having all your production confiscated and being fined.
