As many people find out the hard way, starting a business (especially an apparel business) is incredibly daunting task. No matter how skilled you are as a designer, if you lack the right business skills needed then your dream may never even take off from the starting point.

In the next three months, using Frances Harder's book; fashion for profit, I will follow step by step, the required business skills to preparing my business for its first test run.

The test run will last for six months. Even though the business will not make money during this period, the test run will solidify the structure and give great insight to how my business will run from the actual start up date.

www.tallgenez.com This is the link to my site. TallGenez is a fashion business dedicated to designing made to measure jeans for all Tall Women. It will be an e-commerce business. My wife who is 6ft5 talked to me about this area of fashion that needed great attention. My aim is to eventually have a full fashion house dedicated to design all garments for Tall Women. Choosing Jeans is the first step.

Over the following 3 months you can follow my progress to the test run phase. on September 1st 2008 my website will be in it's 1st working phase. Please feel free to comment and view my progress.

Thanks to everyone who are supporting the TallGenez project,

Roy Parkin CEO/Chief designer of TallGenez

After much consideration due to the priceless advice I received from you and all of your books, my business TallGenez now has a new and clear direction.

Made to measure for a start up business would cause a lot of problems. I can still design various styles to suit all Tall women world wide and have the styles with no maximum limit to the inseam without it being made to measure.

I found a jeans manufacturer in LA who not only produces the jeans but will work on buying the denim and also pattern cutting. This will cut my costs down and still deliver a high quality denim jeans collection for Tall Women that fits any length and any shape or size.

I will begin to design my first sample collection on July 28th.

Once again thanks for your advice Frances, it has saved me so much time and money. Watch this space!

Dear Frances,

I am just touching base with you on everything.

I'm in correspondence with Lazy J Jeans and I'm just getting ball park price figures for the cost of making premium denim jeans.

I found a designer in NYC who once worked for Ralph Lauren who will help me perfect the designs and technical flats for the manufacturer in LA.

Both have fair pricing and are happy to help TallGenez set up. Finance wise I'm turning to family for the initial start up and then using my business plan I will seek micro loans from various banks.

I am always reading your books as they are a continued beacon of light in this dark start up period! :)

Regards,

Roy
