A hot topic in the apparel industry is the US Customs crackdown on LDP (landed duty paid) sales made by non-US vendors who use US-based clearing agents to act as importer of record. In recent months, US Customs has conducted some 200 unannounced visits to the premises of clearing agents and brokers, including a number of visits in the Los Angeles area.
US Customs is stopping shipments, challenging the right of the clearing agents to act as importers of record as well as challenging the value declared for customs purposes, believing that in many cases the value is underdeclared.
